1. Mercy in the details
Over the last few weeks, I've been reading through Deuteronomy in my Bible reading and prayer time. It's been a stretching time. On the one hand, I've been unsettled by the strength and violence of some of the commands. For example 21:18-21 says rebellious sons were to be put to death because 'you must purge the evil from among you'. Likewise Israel is told to completely destroy the nations in the land they are going into - men, women, children, livestock, 'do not leave alive anything that breathes' (20:16-17). Now I know all this sits in a bigger context of God's plan and revelation but I want to avoid giving simplistic neat answers. So, more to come on this one!
However, in the midst of all this wrestling I was surprised and humbled (again) by God's mercy and concern for individuals. We see in 23:15-16 that God commands Israel to provide safe refuge to a runaway slave from another nation. The slave is to have freedom to live and make a life in Israel wherever he or she chooses. This seems very reasonable to us but in the Ancient world it was unheard of. International treaties required that runaway slaves be returned to their master in the nation they had escaped from. God commands his people to protect the weak and resist tyranny. So I don't have all the answers and I don't have everything neatly boxed away. However, I've been reminded again that Deuteronomy is not a book to be avoided but instead to be meditated upon as a revelation of God's character and passion to build a community of real worship.
2. Merry, Merry Christmas
How are you going with Christmas in August? A quick refresher...
One of the pictures of heaven in the Bible is of a feast, a big party. We will enjoy God together for all eternity. As we wait for that day, we get a little taste of heaven when we share our lives, meals, friendship together. Sharing that joy with people who don't know Jesus is a wonderful way to point them to eternal life. So this winter try 'Christmas in August'. Have a meal with another family, couple or friends from CC and invite other families, couples or friends who are not involved in church. Share life together in the hope that relationships will grow where Jesus is shared and loved.
Let me know what you're planning so we can pray for and encourage each other.
3. The Gramlys
Many of you know the Gramlys are returning to Australia on Saturday from America. Many of you will know their situation and how difficult the last few years have been for them. So along with the excitement of seeing old friends comes an opportunity to serve. So;
1. If you are able to help them with any household items (their stuff is currently in transit) please speak to Dani Scarratt or Helena Au.
2. If you are keen to help them with a cash donation, please place it in the perspex box this Sunday marked 'For the Gramlys'.
